Purpose

The purpose of this report is to gain permission to consult on the drafted Creating a Mentally Healthy City Strategy for Birmingham. The strategy will provide strategic direction to the Creating a Mentally Healthy City Forum, a subforum of the Birmingham Health and Wellbeing Board. The strategy proposes a comprehensive holistic approach to mental health and wellbeing by increasing individual knowledge and resilience, enhancing community and family support and providing safe and supportive places. The strategy also includes a suicide prevention strategy to promote actions to prevent suicides and make suicide prevention everyone’s business. The only financial implications noted in the consultation period are printed materials, a summary animated video of the strategy to improve accessibility and targeted communications to reach underserved communities.

(i)         Approved an 8-week public consultation on the draft Creating a Mentally Healthy City Strategy 2025 – 2035, commencing on 24th March to 16th May 2025; and

(ii)        Agreed that the outcomes of the consultation and the strategy post consultation be submitted for approval to a future meeting of the Cabinet.
